Leadership

The first 90 days of a newly promoted manager

· 5 min read

Technical excellence does not transfer automatically to leadership. A structure for supporting new managers through the transition.

Promoting your best specialist into management is common, and often unsupported. The skills that earned the promotion are not the skills the role now requires.

In the first month, the priority is clarity: expectations, decision rights and the rhythm of one-to-ones. Most new-manager anxiety comes from ambiguity, not workload.

In the second month, focus on delegation. New managers typically hold on to technical work because it feels safe and measurable.

By month three, the conversation should turn to performance: setting standards, giving direct feedback and addressing issues while they are still small.
